KUCHING: All 18 crew on board cargo ship MV Soon Bee II, which went missing near Kuala Rajang in Sarikei on Tuesday, have been found.

Mukah acting police chief ASP Jamil Othman confirmed that the eight Malaysians, nine Indians and one Indonesian were saved by a passing tugboat at around 4pm yesterday.

He added that his office was alerted by a marine officer on the latest development, and was told that the tugboat, with the saved crews onboard, was now heading towards Mukah.

The Kuching-registered MV Soon Bee II, which was built in 1970, was heading to Sibu with 18 crew members on board when it went missing around 8am on Tuesday following torrential rainfall and rough sea condition.

The ship’s captain had reportedly sent a distress message that the 56-metre long vessel had suffered a leak during its journey.

A representative of the company which owns the vessel had immediately lodged a report with the Maritime Department in Kuching when they lost contact with the vessel on the same day.
